View Full Version : Windows XP Problem
Just got Windows XP for christmas, and installed it yesterday. Installed AIM and a couple games. Everything worked fine up until this morning. When I went to turn the computer on this morning, Windows itself won't boot up. It goes past the RAM check and all that, but just stays at a black screen when it's supposed to boot up windows.
Anyone know any possible way to fix this?

Can you boot it up into safe mode?
Try loading up the pc with the windows xp disk in the cd drive.... Then select repair install...

Graphic Card maybe,
Do you have a installed graphic card and a onboard graphic card?
If so you may need to change BIOS settings so that it knows to switch from onboard to graphic.
If thats wrong uhh give some more detail to the problem.

there is also a start up shutdown patch available, if you can get into windows sometimes try that, other wise try and boot to safe mode check all of your drivers, run msconfig go to the startup tab and select only the necissary programs to run windows then try and restart and see what happens. If you are still having problems send me a pm i will give you my phone number and i will try and walk you through all the trouble shooting.

I have an installed one, thats it. I have a couple games on the XP h/d that worked last night, and at was shut down/restarted many times last night. I have one hard drive with XP on it, and one hard drive with Win98 on it. Theyre not "interconnected" (master/slave), but both are set on master and I switched to the 98 one last night to see if there was anything on it worth saving before wiping it and making it a slave drive. When I switched back, XP wouldn't boot. I'm back on the 98 one now so I can try to get some help with it.
As for the disk, I tried it earlier with the disk in, it didn't reconize it. I don't think it will reconize the safe mode command either (as it doesn't even START to lead windows before it "freezes")

disconnect the 98 drive completly and try to rebote make sure the jumpers on the xp drive are right.

Did that already. The XP drive is disconnected entirely when I use the 98 drive, and visa versa.

change your boot options in your bios to go Cdrom then hard drive... Restart with cd in drive and see what you can do from there.

Sounds like a possible video card driver issue. (maybe) I had one not that long ago. If you have a newer vidcard and you try to install the drivers without having SP2/DX9 installed it can cause some system instability issues. What order do you reinstall your apps/games/patches after reload?
Edit NM, if you were playing games already with it, it SHOULD be fine. Are you SURE you didnt do any updates before you shut it off last time? (Automatic Update, depending on settings will automatically install updates it D/L when you shut down a computer.)
I got it workin now, I got it to start in safe mode. I had to restore windows files because "stolkrnl.exe is either missing or corrupt." But it works now. Thanks to everyone though.
