Nintendo's first online game= increasing numbers.
On November 14th, Nintendo's first online game, Mario Kart DS, was launched.
Through Nintendo's Wi-Fi online service, 45% of the people who purchased the game went online in the first week. 112,000 copies of the game were sold within the first week, of those 112,000 consumers, 52,000 took their copies online.
These numbers may not seem important until you take into consideration that, according to Microsoft, only 18% of consumers who bought Halo 2 within the first 3 weeks took their game online through Xbox Live!
Beth Lewellyn said, "We are ecstatic with the results, and this definitely sets the standard for future Wi-Fi online gaming, Mario Kart should easily be a million seller in its life cycle, and we'd love for everyone with the game to touch the Wi-Fi experience. We've got Animal Crossing Wild World just around the corner, and Metroid Prime Hunters next year, with more to come."
This is great news for Nintendo. One of Nintendo's main goals with their online plan was to increase the percentage of gamers who play games online. If Nintendos games continue to rack up these numbers, they may achieve their goal and, through competition, may cause other online services *cough*Xbox Live!*cough* to persue similar tactics with their services, like lets say free online?
