So let's get this tech talk started what do you guys think is the most efficent.

Wired wouldn't be efficient in setting up because you have to go under your house make holes in your wall. But it does come in handy after (I should know), I currently have all my ports in my router filled with wires so thats kind of a drag not being able to put anything else in there, but wired also runs better I think because it doesnt have to send a signal through walls which would give you less signal stregth.

Wireless would be easy to set up but not cost efficent it cost's a lot more to buy a router thats wireless and then the network card's. I have never had wireless but I do think you can set up as many as you want ,correct me if I'm wrong? Would be nice to be sitting on the couch to use a laptop that was truely wireless too, without the lan cable.

What do you guys think? Post your oppinions please :D

Ya, my mom has a laptop and i had to set it up for her. You basically buy a router like you said and a card, and you're set to go. Also, if you keep the card and go to downtown or someplace that has many hotspots for internet, it automatically connects for you, so it would be better in that case.

to me its just good to have a computer...but im guessing wireless would be good cause no wires so yeah and that was a nice idea bout a laptop with no uh cables so yeah hope that helps. wireless

Im getting a wireless in the next few days becasue i ordered this nice ass laptop. So when i go away to college ill still be able to play all the games i play now. This laptop will be able to run source so ill be happy and ill be able to use vent. They have smart routers now that scan the house. It finds the easiest path around walls and furniture. Ofcourse this is more expense but much more efficient and will work like you have a cable in your computer.

My wireless works just as good as wired.. and it doesnt matter if you have walls or anything when you have wireless unless there is a 18 foot brick wall lol.. i have someone a block and a half away and ive used her signal before lol and it had an ok signal.. i always get full signal with my wireless but I like wired more unless im using a labtop which you dont need to buya card for unless its ancient.

You could get a switch, with 8 ports - one hooking to the Router and the other 7 doing anything else!

If you using MAC Addresses to make it secure I think you can only have 125 registered, but that's probably enough.

Wireless = bad for gaming

if your playing a very consuming online game , and if your loosing a bit of the strengh of the signal , you will cry.

Wires are good but too long wires = you loose signal.

Well if you have a constant strong signal it's fine for gaming; it's just for downloading you'll get less speed (802.11g = usually 56mbps), also with the wires I don't think that's true

At a certaint length the signal does weaken but not for a house hold. Thats why large networks like schools have sections with routers so the connection is always strong. Backbones.

True story..... In the office when I was running cat5 cables we had what I would guess bad quality wire and if I made a whip longer then 10ft it would be useless. So good quality wire you can get quite a distance with but low quality and you better be close. Wireless you will only notice the negative effects with gaming when playing a game where ping maters majorly. aka fps and wow lol.

i was suprized how well the xbox 360 wireless controllers work, even the internet adapter seems to work well

the only problem i have is with my wireless adapter for my computer, witch sometimes gives out at night, but thats cus im about 50 feet away, and a story up

ive been using 50ft network cords and I never seen my speeds go down. I am even have 2 computers running off of 2 50 footers and so far both computers run at max internet speeds sometimes above the speed limit at times.

Hard for me to tell if these long network cords slow down my speeds. so far no speed decrease on these 2 computers.

the average is about 150 ft before you need repeaters to not loose signal streght in shielded cat5, with unshielded about 25 is the max with nothing magnetic around it. Wireless is great but yes with a g router you are limited to 54mbs but a new router and cards are about to be realeased that are capable of up to 110 mbps wich will pass most wired networks. As far as how many computers you can put on a wireless network i think 125 is right but remember that you are splitting bandwith so becarfull with that. Saying that wireless is bad for gaming is only tru if you are having a lan party without hitting an outside line. Other than that unless you have a dedicated t3 line running to your house you are not going to get a 54mbps connection to the net anyway. Thats my input, if you need anything else just ask.

Ohh and if you dont think i know what i am talking about i am cna, ccna, msce, and a+ certified for computers. I am a certified satellite communications technician through the army.

Wired gets the job done the best.

The only reason I would consider using wireless at all is for the following reasons:

Travel. If I am traveling and I have a wireless connection, BOOYAH, interenet connection the entire time!

Lack of internet service. If the area I am in does not supply anything but dial up or wireless... Gotta take the greater of the two evils.

Stupid. If I am mentally retarded in any way. If I had a wire connection and I felt that wireless was somehow better and I was not doing anything at all, I would choose wireless.

Wireless also depends greatly on your equipment I dont remember what I was using but I had my old laptop and used to try and play d2 way back in the day and the equipment was junk and randomly spiking out of nowhere. hardwire no problem wireless and spiking. tried a different wireless set up and had alot better results. Connection depends on equipment and the quality of everything as well.

wired... as long as it is not too much of a pain. THen wireless. I wired my comp a floor up and 30 feet across 2 wills... all in the ceiling. It was worth it... But I do stuff like that.

Personally i prefer wireless because you do have the same capabiltiy as wired but also you have to worry about the problem of other people picking up your connection and using (especially when you have extenders) so both have pros and cons but most places i've seen have wireless cheaper than wired but you have to buy the adapters for your computers so its about even.

with my speeds gettin over 7 megs on wired wont cut it for me for wireless. I am a network tech so i like messin around with networking wires.
