Few friends tell me to go to Circuit City and copy the codes off the bottom of their laptops. Other than that I have Ultimate on my old laptop from Beta that works fine ... no need to pay for it.

Yea me and a few buddies used to go and get the codes off the bottom of their laptops until they started to make brackets holding the front down so you couldnt tip it and take a pic.

I would burn it but I have no dvd burner. I can also get Office 2007, I assume it is good to go because office doesn't normally have problems.

I have been searching the web and I have seen nothing about them tracking torrents yet, further more..people have been doing speed tests on torrents with Vista and they say that torrents run 10% faster because of the way Vista stacks TCP/IP connections.

JAGeGodfather
02-01-2007, 08:45 PM
Ya, but all the data that you get while downloading torrents off of it is sent back to Microsoft, which then will go around and get you fucked over for downloading a movie.

JAGeBsuGuy
02-01-2007, 08:48 PM
I don't see how they can do that though, isn't that against personal privacy and stuff?

JAGeGodfather

They probably have a tracking program in their OS. It's part of what you buy and probably listed somewhere in the ToS that no one reads :-/

JaGe Lee Harvey Oswald

has anyone ever actually read an entire ToA?

JAGeBsuGuy
02-01-2007, 09:23 PM
no, and has anyone ever see microsoft put tracking software in their OS? They were "supposed" to do it with XP and never did.

I just talked to my guy in computer sevices that has been running Vista for almost a year now and is heading the project of getting it to the students and he said he likes it more than XP and it has no tracking of any kind.

JAGeSIRRIS
02-01-2007, 10:36 PM

thats the same response I get from all the Computer Science majors I know. That vista will in no way track or hinder illegal downloading through torrents or other outlets.

1. Vista Is Incomplete

Microsoft is already planning its first service pack and seeking input from users on what to include. Vista probably won't be truly ready for prime time until that first service pack version, possibly later this year.

The hardware and software companies that make compatible products for Vista aren't all ready for the new OS. Many of those companies are scrambling to complete Vista drivers and updates. Most important, not all video and sound card companies are ready.

Audio and peripheral maker Creative publishes a list detailing the status of drivers for each of its many products. Most of their Sound Blaster Internal products already have Vista drivers available. Two of them have only a "beta 2" version of the drivers. Three of their older products say "No Development Planned." Most of their cameras and other peripherals have no Vista-specific drivers available.

On the Advanced Micro Devices site, you can find information about Vista readiness of ATI graphics cards (AMD and ATI merged last year). Most are supported by a Catalyst Vista Software Driver, which is in beta, and are plagued by a long list of published "known issues." It also comes with the following warning: "ATI does NOT recommend installing these drivers in systems used for mission critical operations or where productivity of any kind is a concern."

These two companies are on the leading edge of supporting Vista. Their partial readiness for Vista is symptomatic of the larger companies. Many smaller peripheral makers simply have no Vista support at all.

Some PC vendors, such as Alienware and Polywell, are aggressively pushing XP over Vista, because both say graphics and other drivers for Vista aren't quite ready for prime time.

Software, such as the security suites you may have already paid for, may not run on Vista, and some require updates that aren't ready yet.

Trend Micro, Panda, Computer Associates, and Symantec have all announced that they'll ship updated suites on Tuesday--just in time for the consumer availability of Vista.

Microsoft claims McAfee will support Vista, but hasn't said when. The company itself has not announced Vista support. And some, but not all, ZoneAlarm products will support Vista by next week. The smaller the company, the longer it will generally take for them to support Vista.

Gaming on Vista--and Vista's DirectX 10 graphics support--is awesome for gamers. But that's something you'll be able to fully take advantage of only later. The full gaming potential of DirectX 10 requires three elements: an operating system, supporting graphics hardware, and supporting games. The operating system is ready, the graphics hardware is partly ready, and the games are nowhere. Eventually, Vista will be the ultimate PC gaming platform. But there's simply no reason for gamers to rush out and buy Vista next week.

In the begining there were strong rumors that Vista would have detection to know if your software was legit.... thats a risk im not willing to take until enough people have become the test subjects.

5. Windows XP Isn't Obsolete

Vista adds new benefits and, in the long run, will make computing easier, faster, and a lot more fun. But it doesn't really solve any existing problem. Windows XP--after years of service patches and strong, industrywide support--is a solid, well-understood, and highly functional operating system. And it will continue to be well supported. Microsoft itself has committed to at least seven more years of XP support, and even plans a Service Pack 3 next year.

Gartner says that by the end of this year, XP will be installed on 77.1 percent of all PCs worldwide, and Vista on just 12.3 percent. That means the industry will make sure their new products still work great on XP.

I still believe in the "if It aint broke dont fix it" rule.

5. Driver support -- Key hardware like video and sound is crippled at the moment -- while Nvidia is working furiously to get a stable driver for the 8800 out by the 30th, there's still no SLI support for any of the Nvidia range. And thanks to the removal of hardware accelerated 3D sound in Vista, Creative's popular DirectSound based EAX no longer works at all, muting this feature for just about all gaming titles on the market today. Creative is in the process of coding a layer for its drivers to translate EAX calls to the OpenAL API which is seperate from Vista, but going by past experience with Creative drivers we won't see these any time soon.

6. Applications that don't work -- there's been plenty of coverage about applications that won't work without a vendor update. These include anti-virus, backup and security software such as those from Symantec, Sophos and ilk; CD and DVD burning tools like the suite from Nero need updated versions to work; and even basic disk management and partitioning tools such as Paragon's Hard Disk Manager are awaiting an update for Vista to be compatible. How many more will fail as Vista enters mainstream? Even Firefox has issues with Vista.

7. It's a big fat target -- with a new and untested in the global wild architecture, virus and malware authors are going to work overtime exploiting the holes Microsoft missed. In fact it's already happening. Loath though I am to use the word 'security' and 'Windows' in the same sentence, Windows XP has at least been patched to the hilt and can be used with a plethora of reasonably effective security tools that work now, without waiting for an update down the track.

At this point it doesnt seem like a wise move.... for me atleast.

what are the dates on these though? Because Vista has been in beta test for a long time now. I remember when my buddy who lived next door to me in the dorm got his beta copy of "longhorn" now Vista..4 years ago. every new os has initial problems while manufacturers scramble to update or create new drives. I am simply trying to dispell this myth that Vista is going to track what you do and it report it back to Microsoft. That would be a huge violation of personal privacy that is protected by the bill of rights.

It would not be a violation if Microsoft had software or code in Vista to report illegal programs to microsoft. It would be considered anti piracy. Sony not long ago dropped the ball with a similar thing where they screwed up your cd rom if you put in a music cd.
