Call of Duty was released on October 29, 2003. Despite the flow of WWII fps due to the success of Wolfenstien, COD managed to catch eyes and has been hailed by most as being the best WWII fps around. It was a no brainer that they would release an expansion pack. Now, a year later, we have Call of Duty: United Offensive. Is it as good as the original? No. Is it still a good game? Yes.

Story: 5/10

Seriously, there is no real story. You take the path of three different soldiers in various places and times during the war. You fight as a hardened airborne trooper in the battle of the bulge, a British agent in the battle of Sicily, and finally a Russian Grunt in the battle of Kirsch. The reason why I give this a five is because THERE IS NO REAL STORY! Besides the actual war, the only thing that even relates to a story are the journals shown during the load times. These are corny and usually offer no real information.

Gameplay: 9/10

Luckily, this is one of the things that saves the game from the horrible story. Since this an expansion pack and not a real game, it plays and feels like the original. It’s safe to say that it is almost identical to the original excluding the new levels and a few new additions. The single player consists of 13 levels, half that of the original. However, the levels are almost twice as long, making UO about the same length as the original.

Not much has changed as far as features go in the Single Player. The multiplayer is what really kicks ass. All of the new levels are extremely large, and if you’re a sniper like me, UO will be heaven in death matches. You can now drive vehicles such as tanks and jeeps and even have another grunt jump on the gun just like in Halo!

Graphics: 8/10

After a year of improvement, this game seems extremely bad. Now, the reason it doesn't get a 4/10, is because it's still running on the Quake III engine. With the recent release of DOOM3, its wonder why this game did not get a major upgrade. The particles have been improved drastically, as have some of the environments, but apart from that it still has a rather chalky feeling to everything.

Sound: 10/10

In one word: Awesome. The sound for this game is breathtaking. I cannot begin to describe how realistic it is. All of the weapons and explosions sound so real that if you have a 5.1 system set up it will be as if you are inside the actual. The music, though it doesn't kick in enough times, is an extremely good score composed magnificently.

Final Recommendation: If you like the original I would get it, but if your one of those people who thought it was okay I suggest you pass this one up.
