LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Sheriff's deputy Andy McDowell was forced to live a parent's worst nightmare twice in a matter of minutes.

After he was taken to the site where one of his two sons was killed in a car crash early Wednesday, McDowell was driven past another fatal accident. Only later did he learn that the fiery wreck took the life of his only other child.

"You take the most unimaginable hell that a parent could be told and double that," Warren County Deputy Coroner Dwayne Lawrence said.

Rory McDowell, 23, and Cory McDowell, 21, both died within a couple of miles from the home they shared with their father in southern Kentucky's rural Warren County.

Rory McDowell lost control of his pickup truck coming out of a curve and the vehicle struck a tree shortly before 1:30 a.m., authorities said. There was no visible sign of alcohol involved, sheriff's Capt. Brent Brown said Thursday.

The father told authorities he had been talking with Rory McDowell on a cell phone about the time of the crash, Brown said. He said that might have been a factor in the crash, as well as excessive speed on a narrow road. He had no further details.

About 15 minutes after the first crash, Cory McDowell's 1984 Porsche veered off another rural road, went into a spin, struck a tree and burst into flames, authorities said.

The crashes remained under investigation, police said.

I can't imagine the horror that this father is going through right now. I can't imagine the hurt of loosing one child but two children and the only children you have, that is something that I personally do not think I can live with. My thoughts and prayers go out to him.

Not to mention to make matters worst, with the Holidays coming up right around the corner its something that will not ease with time. As Boyle said, I hope people are keeping a eye on him.

yup stuff like that happens here in kentucky a lot people dont watch what they are doing and drive way to fast the roads are so small in place you got to pull over to let other vehicles pass you and if you figure in the use of cell phones while driving that makes these roads even more dangerous believe me ive seen my share of bad accidents on these small kentucky roads to know that the state needs to make them a lot safer and people should go at a slower pace

Thats horrible. Think of it this way also not only did he lose his kids but the presents that he bought for them for christmas. What wil he do. With his kids gone the wrapped presents under the tree. It wouldnt suprise me if he took his own life during christmas. The reminder that his children are gone.

I don't think at this point in time he is worried or cares about christmas gifts. I agree that he doesn't need to be alone, but I wouldn't be surprise if he doesn't take down all his decorations. Personally I would take down all the decorations and forget about christmas, it would be too painfull to keep up the decorations. What he really needs right now is the love and support of his friends, family and the Lord. we can only pray that the Lord eases his pain and suffering.
