the term before i go i'll be taking a prep course where they'll supposedly teach me everything i *need* to know. I assume that will include rudimentary chinese. Up until a few years ago it was a british colony of sorts though so i'm pretty sure that most of the necessities will be accessible in some way in english. Obviously i'm gonna try to get as fluent as i can with chinese anyway so that i'm not completely helpless talking to a native speaker.
