Why should you play this game?
If you ever played D2 and enjoyed pvp in any aspect... play this game.
If you ever played Dota and enjoyed it.... play this game.
If you enjoyed D2 but wished there were more classes to mix it up.... Play this game.
They have a bunch of different "champions" you can select. They add new ones often.
Its free to play, and every week they switch up the lineup of characters you can choose.... or buy it for like $20 at gamestop or wherever and have a ton unlocked.
Boyle plays this game..... nuff said. /end of thread.

Easy to learn, hard to master, every character is different (though some obviously share SOME similarities if they are meant to perform a similar role) and a new champion is added about once every two weeks, along with a patch which further balances the champions already out. The free champions rotated each week will give a pretty good spread of the different roles available allowing you to try out every aspect of the game, and by buying the collectors pack from a gamestop or such will allow you a couple dozen permanent heroes for you to use. Additionally, you accrue in game money which you can permanently unlock individual heroes with over time.

Back in June Riec made a thread on this game..... now it is 5 months later and I am making a thread on it.... there are not 4 threads on this game on the main page of any forum... or on these forums in general. Its a good game and people should give it a shot. we have people on vent playing it quite often. when was the last time 6 people were on vent on a monday morning playing a game together......

jungler
WTF does that word mean? I watched some character showcase videos on youtube and guy kept saying that. I thought he was mispronouncing "juggler" because he mentioned it often with moves that knock people in the air.

There are a number of mob packs in the forest between the paths on the map, quite similar to creep packs in Warcraft 3. This area is called the "jungle". When somebody is "jungling" they're forgoing killing the opposing teams mobs in the lane and instead are killing the neutral creeps in the jungle. This allows for two solo lanes, which increases the rate of experience of those who are in a lane alone as they no longer have to share experience with a partner. It also allows the jungler to remain elusive and therefore have the advantage of surprise when they can appear out of the jungle to help gank in a lane, because the other team will have no way of knowing where they are at any point unless they enter a lane or they use wards/clairvoyance.

If you played it for 2 weeks and got bored you probably weren't playing with other people. We don't have a lot of people playing but we did manage to do a 3v3 in-house game the other day with all jag people. Just get the game running and come into the league of legends channel or the lounge and holler if you want to play

Meh, I've heard from numerous people that the characters aren't even remotely close to being balanced and that when they nerf an OP character it becomes unusably bad.

I've seen that happen once. The champions are pretty even though. Some are better, but they cost more points too. They also have a "draft" mode to where you can ban 4 champions prior to selection, and yes it's a draft after the banning.

Between the 3 Lanes there is "Jungle" where a few Neutral creeps spawn and stand around. Some are weak and give only gold and exp. Stronger ones give you buffs that last a certain duration and the very strongest give global buffs/exp/gold...

What I got out of it was a jungler would not follow the paths between 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 but would take back routes to evade enemy players and kill the mobs there. Then if you have two junglers on the same team you both can do that and gain xp faster and somewhat safer (though if the enemy runs into you by yourself you're fucked) than if you both did it together. The map is like Warcraft 3 in that there is a constant fog of war over everything but the radius around you and your teammates so it allows you sneak around MUCH easier if you stay off the normal paths. Wards and Clairvoyance I'm assuming lessen or remove some of that fog of war so they can see farther/certain areas they may not be in at the time.
Someone correct me if I am wrong on that interpretation though.

Not quite o_O.
The jungler is the one that sticks to the numerical path marked. Those are simply numbered creep camps in the most efficient kill order for several of the characters. Everyone else stays in the beaten path, where mobs originating at the two bases fight it out (much like in DOTA). The 7's are potential places to go if you finish early, before starting the cycle over again. Theres 5 people per team, so the most efficient way to split it up is 2 lanes with 2 people each and 1 lane with 1 person. A jungler allows for two solo lanes, so more exp for those people. The jungler gets exp from the mobs he kills in the jungle, which will keep him about on pace with the rest if hes good. The fog of war interpretation was about right though.
Pantheons not very good. Ezreal got nerfed to shit but i still wreck house with him (i wish i coulda played him in his hayday). Shens still awesome, i can only imagine how he was like before if he was actually nerfed.

You are both wrong and right in your assessment of jungling. Junglers do take the back paths and farm the creeps that spawn in the map and try to have free reign to get behind the enemy team's champions for ganking or jungling on their side. They way you describe it seems like you didn't get into higher level play where most team compositions are a jungler, a mid solo lane, a top solo lane and a tank+support bottom lane. Having two people on a team jungling is counterproductive as they will gimp each others experience just for the fact there arent enough mobs to go around. The argument against that I'm anticipating is using the other sides jungle and there are three problems with that. 1) The enemy team has a jungler that is already doing their side of the forest, 2) Teams already ward the high value areas of both their own and the enemy's jungle in order to harass and gank junglers, 3) A jungler is already a sitting duck enough for an assassin based character and having more than one is just increasing the risk for the enemy to get fed and run away with the game.
In order for a jungler to avoid ganks, yes he either needs a teammate to have clairvoyance (since any jungler who's not a complete fucking idiot will have smite + either ghost/flash/exhaust/ignite) or has to invest in wards. That is a tall task to ask of your jungler as his initial item build through his first 6 levels is not forgiving for deviations. It's also a tall task for teammates to cover their jungler while laning as it causes them to miss out on getting experience and keeping up with their laning opponents. He should also deviate from what the standard jungling protocol is (starting at golem) as enemy teams usually send two or three people to hit him at the 1:50 mark to catch him around 1/2 health and the golem around 1/4. This usually ends in an easy first blood for the enemy and a free magic buff off the golem and a level for all those who participated. A jungler who can adjust his route for max gain is more useful than someone who is following the copy pasta route and usually sets himself up in position for maximum benefit to his team be it tower covering when someone needs to teleport home due to healing/shopping/death or ganking someone on the other team who is pushing too far to take the pressure off his team.
Junglings a complicated science that certain characters are better at than others.
And TROLLOL on the nerfed to shit and the claims of overpowerment. No character has been nerfed to utter shit to the point they are unplayable. Pantheon can still bring the hurt, ez can still zip around and hurt bitches and while Shen the TANKS' DPS was nerfed he can still taunt, shield and heal and he can still get kills. Riot does good at balancing their characters despite the demented honking of the forum fanbase who have absolutely NO CLUE on how to balance.
I also see you named a bunch of carrys for overpowered. A carry is someone who if they build correctly carries the team towards the end of the game while being carried at the beginning due to their initial weakness. Xin is useless if the enemy team has a stun or taunt, same goes with jax. Garen is called overpowered because people don't understand that you don't facecheck bushes against him. Not him being overpowered, people are just god damn stupid.
TL&DR VERSION
A jungler and their team is better off with him jungling by himself in an unorthodox jungling pattern in his own jungle and hoping that he is smart and savvy enough to avoid ganks while assisting his team with the odd gank opportunity that presents itself.
And TROLLOL: the game is pretty balanced, no one has been seriously nerfed into uselessness and it's all based on personal preference who is overpowered or underpowered.

The game is always being patched. whats OP or under powered now might not be that way in a day or two. Its just a poor argument on why the game might not be worth playing is all. A game they continue to update, and release characters cant be pegged as leaving things over powered or under powered with how many champions they have its impossible to have someone considered completely unbalanced.

It's also impossible to achieve a state where it's completely balanced. I mean look at WoW. It has 10 classes and to say at any given point during it's history that all the classes were balanced would be a pretty big stretch (more so during some version than others).
If you guys are advocating it and my shitty onboard gfx card can run it then I'll more than happily try it. Just I haven't heard the most promising things about it from numerous people.

Was pretty boring after a while still. And no we weren't losing the majority of our games :\
If you aren't stupid then you shouldn't be losing most of your games or getting outplayed until you're max level (30). Unless you just suck really bad that is... or Never played dota I suppose. Anyway. You really have to play like 250+ games to get to where you're constantly with other skilled players. It's a lot, but If you played with us you could start immediately ;)
and 250 games could be a while. average game maybe 30 minutes for 5v5 so you're looking at over 100 hours of play time easily. probably a lot more

Some champions are INTENDED TO BE BETTER THAN OTHERS.
There are currently 4 levels of champions and they rank by cost. 450, 1350, 3150, and 6300 points. So obviously the idea is that 6300 champions should be "overpowered" and 450 ones might be "nerfed". One of my favorite champions, Kayle, got "nerfed into oblivion" as you would say. She was very OP and now she sucks. BUT she also costs 450 points and I think that was the justification of the dramatic change.
That being said, a game with 64+ characters has a lot of variables so it's really tough to get everything perfect or ideal. I think they're doing a good job though. And I make this evaluation based upon ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME for hundreds of hours and what has been almost a year.

Because it's not like this is a team game and how well you do is entirely dependent on not only your skill but your team's skill.
Some champions are INTENDED TO BE BETTER THAN OTHERS.
That's real fair and definitely not unfair to people who didn't pay for the game in the least.

I have a hard time believing one champion is intended to be better than another when Ashe is widely regarded as far outclassing Ezreal in the past several patches (450 IP vs 6300 IP). They'd doing their best to balance the overall picture but as it stands there are going to be some outliers in the balance. Master Yi is not one of them. Stupidly fed, they can do a lot of damage very quickly, combined with his natural speed obviously this makes it trouble for 1v1. In a team fight though, hes one of the most easily shut down and certainly one of the squishiest heroes around. He's just stupid-easy to use, which is why you see low level players getting high amounts of kills with him.

For those who keep up with such things, new Elementz list:
* Tier 1: Janna, Sona, Galio, Morgana, Miss Fortune, Ashe, Corki, Warwick, Anivia, Annie, Taric, Shen, Amumu.
* Tier 2: Kennen, Tristana, Twitch, Kog’Maw, Kassadin, Zilean, Twisted Fate, Garen, Rammus, Xin Zhao, Udyr, Vladimir, Olaf, Gragas.
* Tier 3: Malphite, Poppy, Sivir, Pantheon, Shaco, Karthus, Mordekaiser, Veigar, Akali, Sion, Nunu, Irelia, Heimerdinger, Singed Yi, Fiddlesticks.
* Tier 4: Cho’Gath, Teemo, Leblanc, Ezreal, Nasus, Kayle, Soraka, Blitzcrank, Gangplank, Nidalee, Jax, Eve.
* Hard to place on a team (aka Tier 5): Lux, Swain, Katarina, Alistar, Ryze, Urgot, Mal’zahar, Tryndamere, Mundo.
Not much changed. Irelia is T3. Sounds about right.
For those of you who DON'T keep up with such things, this list is only really applicable at the highest level of play. I can guarentee you can steamroll a Normal 5's of baddies at level 30 with a good Dr. Mundo and certainly anything sub 30 if you're good enough. Pick a damn new character O_O from everything I've seen it's an extremely hard character to master and you don't have the experience necessary to streamline the learning process of a new character. You've got her basics figured out, try a bunch of different, easier heroes, get a feel for the game as a whole, then go back to Irelia. It's what I had to do with Ezreal, he's even squishier and even more reliant on items and skillshots.
But yeah, play on your own for a little while and blow off steam if I'm pissing you off. Sorry for yelling at you for going 0/9 in mid =)

But if you wanna get really good its not a bad thing to consider.
Tiers are for queers. Seriously tournament play doesn't reflect if a character is OP/UP. Also Blitzcrank lower than Fiddlesticks made me lol.

You're absolutely right. You've obviously learned more about this game in the week you've played than I have, and certainly more than the top placing tournament team in the circuit.
Blitz pull is cheap because it can grab you when you're standing still not paying attention. Critplank is OP despite parley being on a 5-second or so cooldown and him being otherwise completely useless in a team fight due to his long cooldown RNG ult which doesn't scale with the rest of his items and two other super-situational, low impact spells and him being a slow squishy melee character. Nerf Ryze, his power is maximum.

No I'm saying that Tiers are for Queers because of the basis for what defines a champion's tier location. It's based almost entirely by how much tournament play they receive and that doesn't have a direct correlation with how good the character is in team fights. Tiers for EVERY OTHER multiplayer game are generally regarded as subjective and only objectively noticeable when comes to the comparison between the top tier and the bottom tier. Other than that, it's just semantics from a crowd who is subjected to FOTM fad champions just like everyone else.
Also due to Fiddlesticks rather small range on his spells, his usefulness in 5v5 comes primarily from his Ult and the occasional Terrify; compare that to Blitzcrank who has abilities which are all arguably good in 5v5 and maybe you can understand my point.
